2014 Shared Parenting Report Card

In 2014, National Parents Organization released the 2014 NPO Shared Parenting Report Card,® a report issuing state-by-state grades in the nation’s first comprehensive review of child custody statutes as they relate to shared parenting.

NPO found that the vast majority of state statutes were not designed to promote shared parenting when parents live apart, the arrangement that has been shown to best promote children’s interests in most cases.

In the 2014 NPO shared parenting study:

  • 0 states received ‘A’s

  • 8 states received ‘B’s

  • 18 states received ‘C’s

  • 23 states received ‘D’s

  • 2 states received ‘F’s

The 2019 NPO Shared Parenting Report Card® shows some improvement; however, the majority of states do not have parenting time statutes that effectively promote children’s well-being.
